Senafe is the last of the Muhammedan villages: all beyond are Christian. They are either scattered over the Shumazano plain, built on isolated masses of rock, or are on the sides of the surrounding hills; the country being either under the plough, or, near where the water flows, presenting rich pasture land. The largest village in Shumazano is called Akhfessee, and overlooks the bright green valley which was named "Goose Plain," from the number of geese that frequented it before it was too much shot over. Here dwelt Ayto Gosho, the governor of the district, appointed by Kasa of Tigre. He is a tall, stout personage, wearing a silken dress of honour, with a bland face concealing cunning--altogether too plausible a Ctiap. v. A MARKET. 193 man. His large adderash, or hall,1 is supported on timber pillars, and contained a fire in the middle, several sheep and calves, the plough and corn-rake, and two gigantic earthen jars, eight feet high, forming the family granary. He spread a handsome Persian mat on the alga or bedstead 2 for our reception, and his sons brought us tej in huge Bavarian tumblers, and tef cakes. Beyond the adderash was the elfine,3 or women's apartment; and upstairs he had a small sleeping-room. The market of his district was held every Thursday, on the ridge dividing the Shumazano and Mena valleys, just behind the village of Akhfessee--a very busy and interesting sight. Upwards of two thousand men and women congregate together on these market days, selling grain, grass, hides, ghee, mules, and bullocks, honey, chilies, and onions.
