The events which placed William in this exalted position and made him the leading personage in South Wales on the English side at the close of the twelfth century have already been narrated;178 it suffices to add that he was a typical Norman baron, as scrupulous in his attention to the forms of religion CHAP, as he was ruthless and grasping in his dealings with his fellow-XVmen. The author of the massacre of Abergavenny would not pass a church or a wayside cross without stopping in his talk to offer up a prayer, and he would speak to children in the street for the mere satisfaction of hearing them answer his greetings with the conventional words of blessing.179 172 In the summer of 1188 Glanville obtained a large force of Welsh mercenaries for Henry, who took part in the operations against Philip Augustus and returned in October (Ben.
