Seller's Description:
12mo. Red buckram with gilt spine lettering. xvii, 447pp, (8pp ads). Very good. A tight and nice first edition of this first important history of the state, rebound (1968) in library buckram. Second state, with "1818" in title rather than "1814." Noted for its coverage of such events as the Black Hawk War, the early Mormon history (including the death of Joseph Smith) and the murder of abolitionist Elijah Lovejoy in Alton, this discreet ex-library copy (with very few and mostly-removed markings) hails from the Black Hawk War city of Galena in northwest Illinois, where Ford himself briefly resided. Byrd notes that some copies contain six pages of advertisements at the rear and some eight, but suggests no priority. BRADFORD 1337. BYRD 2105. GRAFF 1380. HOWES F254. SABIN 25070.

Publisher's round blind-embossed stamp to front free endpaper. 447 pp. plus 8 pp. adverts for Ivison and Phinney to rear. Rubbing, wear and some peeling to leather (front upper corner) but quite solidly bound. Beautiful marbled endpapers of red, orange, blue and grey, with two rub1through spots to these endpapers. Marbled edges. Spotting to just one or so pages, but the remainder of textblock, bright pages, and supple to touch and turn. (Howes, F-254).
I liked this book quite a bit. The style is fast-moving and to the point. In my opinion, Governor Ford had a lot of interesting things to say about his state and its history.
