Excerpt from A Hand-Book of Irish Antiquities, Pagan and Christian: Especially of Such as Are Easy Access From the Irish Metropolis Not a few of the subjects upon which it is my province now to treat have, especially of late years, excited considerable attention not only in Ireland, but even in countries beyond the limits of the British Empire. Much has been already done, yet much remains to be accomplished. It is not sufficient to have shown that Ireland contains an unbroken series of monuments, many of them historical, which lead us back, step by step, to a period long anterior to the conversion of her people to Christianity, - to have formed museums, - to have translated annals and manuscripts relating to her history and antiquities a feeling should be awakened in the breasts of the people generally to preserve with scrupulous care the numerous remains of early Irish art owith which the country everywhere abounds, and which frequently, in local history, form our only records. The anxiety which the various governments of Europe, even the most despotic, evince for the preservation and con servation of their antiquities shows how widely their importance is recognized. It is even so, especially of late years, in America. In the following pages I do not promise my readers any very wonderful discoveries, any startling facts.
