This order comprises nine genera, viz., phyma, verruca, molluscum, vitiligo, acne, sycosis, lupus, elephantiasis, frambmsia. Phyma. (a suppurating tumour) is the name given by Willan to a genus intended to comprise both furunculi (boils) and anthraces (carbuncles). It may likewise properly include the hordeolum or sty. Diseases of this genus have recently attracted a large share of professional attention, on account of their having become epidemic throughout the civilised world. Boils, carbuncles, styes, and whitlows have prevailed, as is known to all practitioners of medicine, for the last ten or twelve years throughout the whole of Europe, and accounts of the prevalence of the "furunculoid epidemic," as it has been called, have likewise been received from the East Indies, from America, and from the Cape. It is difficult to account for it, but it is doubtless due to the same cause as the change of the general type of disease from the sthenic to the asthenic character. The only way of ascertaining the statistics of this strange " exanthem" (as one author has named it) is an examination of the registered returns of the deaths from carbuncle, which of late years have increased many hundred per cent. But the object of this work is to detail the diagnosis and treatment of these affections. The furunculus, or boil, is a collection of purulent matter in the skin or subcutaneous tissues, larger than a pustule and smaller than an abscess.
