Excerpt from A Genealogical Record: Including Two Generations in Female Lines of Families Spelling Their Name Spofford, Spafford, Spafard and Spaford, Descendants of John Spofford and Elizabeth Scott, Who Emigrated in 1638, From Yorkshire, England, and Settled at Rowley, Essex County, Mass Shortly after the previous edition of this book was published, a few belated letters, containing material intended for insertion, were intrusted to the subscriber by the author, to whom she had ren dered some slight assistance in preparing the work for the press, with the injunction to preserve them with care for use in another edition, which must be kept in view, but which he should probably not live to superintend. In the lapse of years, and as the result of much correspondence, this nucleus has gradually gathered to itself the mass of records and memoranda which has, with much care and study, been wrought into a form convenient for publication, and'is now placed in the hands of those who, by a fondness for antiqua rian matters, may be led to an examination of this volume.
