Nick Stern had just building a fishing cabin on Loon Lake when wanted man Eddie Wilkins appears into the middle of the road, causing a deadly accident. As local sheriff Hal Payton pursues Wilkins, Stern perishes in the wreckage of his overturned truck. Three months later, when Stern's family travels to the cabin for the very first time, the father's soul still linkers, unable to cross over due to the grief his death has caused. Meanwhile Wilkins is still on the run, and crashes a speedboat in a particularly treacherous area of the lake while evading the persistent Sheriff Payton. In that moment, as Wilkins hovers between life and death, he allows Stern to enter his body in exchange for saving his soul.
