In hindsight, Princess Margaret and Tony Armstrong Jones had little chance of lasting happiness, but back in 1960, seeing the Princess walk down the aisle under the benevolent gaze of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, it all seemed like a fairytale come true.
This book, written in1977 seems sometimes quaint, with Prince Charles and Princess Anne as royalty's 'white hope' during the fast race by M. and T. towards divorce. Knowing what we do now gives this tale a piquancy, which is fascinating, considering how events have turned out.
We learn incidental information such as Lord Snowdon (Tony) is five feet five and a half inches tall, and the Princess five feet, that she had a small singing voice (she performed at a party on the island of Mustique) but knew all the words. We learn of Tony's brutality towards her at times, as when she wanted to dance with him and he said "Go away, you bore me." It seems there was infidelity on both sides, with behaviour leaning towards petulance and careless acts.
It is a compelling story given that this is a love affair between a Princess of the Realm and a commoner/photographer, and the aftermath when Roddy Llewellyn is on the scene is so very reminiscent of how the Princess behaved when she first met Armstrong Jones that one wonders, should she have waited longer before marrying?
Told in plain English, with a brief background going back to Queen Victoria, this work gives the reader an easy progression into the 1970s.
