Originally published in 1886 this is the first edition since that time. Lawrence, an illiterate footsoldier with Wellington dictated his memoir. He enlisted with the 40th Regiment and served in some of the most notable campaigns of the Napoleonic Wars during his unbroken period of service from 1805-1819: the South American Expedition of 1806-1807; the Peninsular War 1808-1814; the after math of the Battle of New Orleans and the Battle of Waterloo.
