Part of the never-ending series of Brazilian greats on the British Wrasse label, A Diva From Bahia is a fine compilation of Gal Costa's work, spanning the whole of her career. As with similar releases for other artists, the album collects pieces from the very beginning of her career up nearly to the present day. Also like others in the series however, the tracks are in something of a mixed order. Chronology here is better than many, with eras of work collected together, but it would appear that the main focus in ordering tracks is to make a pleasing transition from song to song (which, of course, is a key to creating a good album aside from chronology). Costa's voice is the prototypical female Brazilian songstress, caressing the lyrics and working well with interplay between herself and the band. Perhaps a greater feature, though, is the collection of compositions. Caetano Veloso has a song here; Erasmo Carlos has a song; Jorge Ben has a song; Tom Jobim has a song. The greats of MPB are all presented through the voice of Costa, and she puts a fine mark upon their work. ~ Adam Greenberg, Rovi
