Doc Holliday is an iconic figure of the Wild West. He was a gunslinging dentist with a gambling addiction and an affinity for women with loose morals. In Matthew Di Paoliââ?¬â?¢s book ââ?¬Å"Holliday,ââ?¬Â? readers are met with a different take on this man, one that leads us to see beyond the tough boyââ?¬â?¢s surface.
Doc Holliday has been diagnosed with tuberculosis and is told to head west for drier air. He has also heard about the elusive fountain of youth and is in search of its healing properties. During his journey, Holliday finds himself in the saloons playing faro with his gal Kate on his lap. Kate is a prostitute who develops a fondness for Holliday and decides to stand by his side as he searches for healing.
As Doc travels from Arizona to Denver, he is met by men who would rather see him in jail than buy their booze. He keeps one hand on his gun and the other on his flask. He becomes a famous figure with an entourage of fans, reporters, and lawmen. When shootouts come to a head, Holliday and Wyatt Earp are a deadly duo who contemplate life, love, and what it means to be alive in the outlaw land of the West.
Doc Holliday is no stranger to the general reader. Movies like Tombstone (Buena Vista Pictures, 1993) made the blowout at the OK Corral a major battle in U.S. history. In Di Paoliââ?¬â?¢s ââ?¬Å"Hollidayââ?¬Â? readers get to turn the page and find they are not much different than the man history has lifted to fame.
Readers will appreciate how well the plot is laid out on the page. Di Paoli uses fact and myth to give us a fresh look inside the mind of Doc Holliday. The plot is simple, and the writing style offers ease in reading. What is most impressive is that readers get to experience the emotions of Holliday. Di Paoli uses phrases, sarcastic responses from Holliday, and thoughtful conversations with friends to reveal a man who rose to fame by the handle of a gun but is still just a man with real feelings and a desire to live and be loved.
I gave ââ?¬Å"Hollidayââ?¬Â? 4 out of 5 stars because the story was easy to read. The plot had the right number of twists and turns. Characters were introduced at the right moments and described in plain language. There were a few minor edits that could be made but were not a hindrance to the story. Fans of historical fiction as well as readers who adore the Old West and men like Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp can and will appreciate what Matthew Di Paoli has crafted in his book ââ?¬Å"Holliday.ââ?¬Â?
