Anthony Powell's roman a fleuve, A DANCE TO THE MUSIC OF TIME, is impressive in all of its four movements, each comprising three novels, about British life from just post-WWI to the early '60s. Its characters are Dickensian in variety and convincing. Especially memorable is the characterization and evolution of Widmerpool, a lumpish, faux-pas prone but ambitious social, business, and political climber whose egoism is a major element of the novel sequence. The understated humor is another of DANCE's delights.
