But so powerful were the impressions made by this oracle upon the minds of those who consulted it, that they often retained an air of melancholy through the whole of their lives; so that the proverb Eig Tgoqiavlov fteft&vrturat, 'He has been consulting the oracle of Trophonius, ' was applied to a person remarkably gloomy or melancholy. CHAPTER XII. OTHER GRECIAN ORACLES. Besides the three principal oracles of Greece which have been mentioned, there were others of considerable celebrity. That of Apollo at Delos was in great repute.
