Not illustrated. 1785 Excerpt: ...but ' whereas atlength we were without any sault of.ours again ' embroiled in a war with each other, only by reason of ' some little distates that arose; and whereas some satal ' or bloody battles were fought between us, for this reason our King has again given it in command to his vice ' admiral, that he would establish a good and firm peace - with your men, which we now intend to conclude upon equal terms, and if you please we will propose them to ' you.' To that end they had free leave from the senate of this city. I. If any ship be cast away in the territory of the city of Algier, the ramains of the shattered ship shall belong to the city, but her persons and goods, and whatever is saved in her, shall remain free to the proprietors. Though this treaty, which is taken from the Theatrum Pacis, torn. II. and from the Theatrum Europ. torn. IX. is of the fame year as the former, yet it;s Inserted, because it is quite different from the other. It is left to the reader to jndge whether these two triatieiwere made in the fame year, or which of the two is the right; though Aitzetr a, . from whom the former is taken, fays it was the treaty made by Admiral Lawson. II. If a Controversy arise betwixt an Englishman arid a Turk, the D van shall decree justly concerning it, and shall use tlieir endeavour that the quarrel may be accommodated, and. that r ght and justice be administered to whom it is due. III. If any difference arise between the English on account of any tumult or murder, or for any civil cause, the eonsul mall be the only judge of it, IV. But if an Englishman owe money to a Turk, not the consul but the cady (i. e. the judge) shall give judgment in the case. V. And if it happen that either party complains of skirmishes, whether by land or sea, a rupt...
