King James sends the earl of Castlemaine as ambassador to Rome, offering to reconcile his people to the power of the Pope. James publishes a declaration for the liberty of conscience. He attempts to introduce four Roman Catholic priests into the University of Cambridge, and expels the Fellows of Magdalen College, Oxford, for refusing to admit a Roman Catholic as their president. Newton publishes his " Principia." 1688. James again publishes his declaration of conscience. The arch 1 Charles II. married Catherine of Braganza, but had no issue by her; he died in the Roman Catholic faith. 2 The battle of Sedge Moor was fought on the 5th of July. The duke of Monmouth, after being proclaimed king at Taunton, was totally defeated by the royal army. He was afterwards found in the disguise of a peasant lying at the bottom of a ditch, nearly exhausted with hunger and fatigue, when he was carried a prisoner to London, and beheaded on Tower Hill on the 15th of July.
