This is one of the greatest collections of short western stories I have ever read. The authors are so varied, that you can actually hear the difference in writing styles as you read, which was facinating. The stories vary in time from the present clear back to the beginning of the west. The writers are, for the most part, well recognized names. Those that aren't so recognizeable still write a fantastic storty. At the beginning of each story John Jakes writes at least one paragraph about the author, which I thought lent greatly to each author; even the ones that I already knew. Knowing some of their personal background was very interesting. Many of the stories appeared in pulp magazines and have never been reprinted. A wonderful book to have in your library
