It isn't fashionable to believe in a real, personal devil. Evil is earth-centered. All individual acts of evil result from victimization by a perpetrator, who also suffered from victimization. Individual responsibility is diminished-if not negated entirely-by corporate culpability. Guilt is diffused over us all, so that no one of us is personally responsible for the sins or crimes we commit. At the same time, we are all held personally responsible for the sins and crimes of our fathers-racism, sexism, exploitation, environmental pillage, and other real and imagined transgressions. Perhaps viewing evil as earth-centered would not be so bad if it were not for the corollary: If evil is earth-centered, then salvation is also earth-centered. Each has an unseen army in the heavenly places, but each army recruits earthly soldiers to the heavenly cause. Both of the earthly armies are made up of all-volunteer forces, but there is no neutrality. Either we march to the beat of Satan's drum or we march to the beat of him who marched into hell, and came out with the keys of Death and Hades (Revelation 1:18).
