TO THE FEMALES OF THE CONGREGATION, EAGLE STREET, LONDON; ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO COMPOSE THE DORCAS SOCIETY, OR ABE TEACHERS IN THE SUNDAY-SCHOOL: ESTEEMED FRIENDS, I Have taken the liberty to dedicate this Memoir to you, on account of the great affection you felt for the dear deceased; and the uncommon respect you paid to her memory. With her native modesty, and excellence of disposition, you were well acquainted. There are none of you, I am persuaded, who are mothers, but would be gratified to see your daughters tread in her steps; and you who are young will consider her conduct worthy of your imitation. You will not expect much that is called Incident in the life of one so young, who seldom left the paternal roof. She had never mixed with the gay and fashionable world; had not entered into their secret, nor was she united to their assembly. Unknown to fame, and indifferent about it, she filled her station usefully, and rendered the domestic circle in which she moved cheerful and happy. It was her great modesty and humility that induced her not long before her death to burn, as she thought, all her papers: but For this circumstance the Memoir would have been more worthy your acceptance. In compiling it I am conscious of no other views than your benefit and the glory of God. I hoped also, that it might be of use to female readers in general, especially those younger branches of religious families who are, or ought to be, engaged in the superintendance of Sunday-schools.
