Julie Shigekuni's first novel, The Bridge Between Us, is a tale of deceit, secrets and betrayals, a multivocal narrative exploring the ties that bind and sever five generations of women in the Hito family. Unfortunately, Shigekuni writes a simple, careful prose that carries little resonance and the author's manipulation of her characters' voices is merely adequate, even dull. They lack the idiosyncrasies of speech that would mark them as distinctive--a fatal flaw in a novel that means to delineate intergenerational and bicultural rifts. And though rooted in the San Francisco Bay Area, the novel evokes only the vaguest sense of place. The narrative slowly gives up its female characters' closely held secrets--the repercussions of an absent mother, a failed suicide, a remembered love in a World War II relocation camp--but in the end, Shigekuni's flat brand of minimalism delivers less emotional reward than it promises.
