Van Campen Heilner conveys his passion, expertise, and broad experience for waterfowl hunting based on experiences from a time just before the full-scale industrialization following world war II. This book is a "must-read" for anyone who wants to learn about duck hunting, but also to tap into a greater sensibility about the companionship it creates and the responsibility it places on its participants to act in an ethical manner, and to protect wetlands and waterfowl. If only more modern-day writers would approach this topic with the ethics and humility of Mr. Heilner, we would have a far richer body of contemporary literature and a far greater sense of the importance of acting responsibly in the field.
