60's Girl Power is a fine collection of girl group classics that is one of the few to combine the sounds of the U.S. and the U.K. groups under one roof. It is interesting to hear the different approach taken, the U.S. being more indebted to R&B and the U.K. artists coming from a traditional pop vocal background for the most part. The compilers make a few slips, like including Fontella Bass' "Rescue Me" and Freda Payne's "Band of Gold" -- great songs but they really fall outside the realm of girls groups -- and giving Sandie Shaw and Betty Everett two songs apiece. There are so many excellent girl group songs out there that there is no reason to double up. Despite these doubts, the disc is a fabulous listen from beginning to end, featuring some of the best pop ever, like the Shangri-Las' "Leader of the Pack," Maxine Brown's "Oh No, Not My Baby," Petula Clark's "Downtown," Chiffons' "One Fine Day," and P.P. Arnold's staggering "The First Cut Is the Deepest." The collection holds no surprises for collectors and misses quite a few important practitioners of the style, but for a neophyte it provides an excellent introduction to one of the most exciting styles of pop music ever concocted. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi
