To that end, this collection scores in spades. While Percy Sledge's biggest hit, "When a Man Loves a Woman," kicks it off, there is no downhill slide for the remaining 19 cuts. His versions of soul classics like "Dark End of the Street," "Try a Little Tenderness," "Tell It Like It Is," "You Send Me," "It Tears Me Up," "I've Been Loving You Too Long," "Baby Help Me," and "My Special Prayer" can be argued about forever in terms of whether they are definitive or not, but there is no debate concerning the authoritative nature of their presentation.
