Whether the Christian right wants to admit it or not, Luther Campbell is a shining example of many of the things that Republicans preach. Hard work, entrepreneurship, and pulling yourself up by the bootstraps are the sorts of things that Republicans espouse, and Campbell -- who came from an inner-city background and used the capitalist system to overcome obstacles and make a fortune -- definitely pulled himself up by the bootstraps. But Florida attorney Jack Thompson wasn't thinking about those things in 1990 when, declaring that the sexually explicit lyrics of Campbell and his 2 Live Crew violated American obscenity laws, he tried to put the group out of business. Thompson, however, only succeeded in making Campbell an unlikely poster child for the First Amendment -- Democrats, Libertarians, and moderate Republicans all rushed to Campbell's defense. Thompson's actions also inspired various record companies to assemble hardcore rap compilations that were full of sexually explicit lyrics; those compilations were the labels' way of thumbing their noses at Thompson and his Christian right supporters. One such compilation was the 1990 Warner Bros. release 2 Nasty 4 Radio. All of the X-rated and R-rated material on this CD was recorded for Warner Bros., Cold Chillin' (which Warner Bros. was distributing at the time), or Sire, and that includes Ice-T's "Girls, L.G.B.N.A.F" and Everlast's "Fuck Everyone" as well as Kool G. Rap's "Talk Like Sex," Roxanne Shante's "Brothers Ain't Shit," and the hilarious "Big Daddy Vs. Dolemite" (Big Daddy Kane's duet with comedian Rudy Ray Moore). 2 Nasty 4 Radio is a compilation that Thompson would not approve of, which is why Warner Bros. put it out -- that, and a desire to make money. This compilation is far from the last word on raunchy rap in the late '80s and early '90s, but it is generally entertaining if you have a taste for that type of material. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi
