The late Australian Robert Parker specialized in the restoration of vintage 78 rpm discs for release on compact disc, while achieving a natural sounding stereo that easily supersedes the record industry's miserable attempts during the early '60s. 1934-1936 collects 18 tracks by Fats Waller & His Rhythm, including one of his most well-known compositions ("Honeysuckle Rose") and one standard ("Lulu's Back in Town"), though most of the disc is filled with lightweight works that producers felt that best fitted Waller's comic genius. Each piece typically starts with a band introduction, a vocal chorus, and the leader's encouragement to his band as the solos are passed around. While this collection may not consist of the true highlights of this period in Waller's career, these recordings will provide some swinging jazz and a bit of amusement. But even Fats Waller seems stumped as to what to do with the forgettable "Big Chief de Sota," as he closes the song by commenting "Cease, cease! De Sota has went!"
