A Unique Perspective on Thanksgiving
1621: A New Look at Thanksgiving presents a unique perspective on the origins and history of the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States. Much of the book portrays the Thanksgiving feast (and events related to it) from the perspective of the Wampanoag Indians who originally lived in present day New England. We learn about the Wampanoag people, language, and diplomacy as well as important Native American leaders such as Squanto and Massasoit. Of course, we also learn about the Pilgrims, their journey on the Mayflower, and the feast of thanks that today is called Thanksgiving. Numerous photographs and maps supplement the narrative. A chronology and bibliography are included (as well as some recipes!). In sum, this book is a new and different perspective that seeks to dispel many of the myths and inaccuracies associated with Thanksgiving.
