Poets have been fascinated and challenged by the sonnet ever since it was imported from Italy to England in the sixteenth century. With its fourteen lines, inexhaustibly variable, it has met particular needs of almost every major poet from Thomas Wyatt to Paul Muldoon. Don Paterson, himself an adept of the form, has devised an anthology that is both sharing of personal favourites and a celebration of high moments in the sonnet's history.

A marvelous introduction to the form of the sonnet, this is a finely tuned anthology gleaned from centuries of writers. Because there is only one sonnet from each of 101 writers it allows the reader to discover poets they may never have read, while being much more manageable and friendly than larger anthologies. I discovered Edna St. Vincent Millay in this book, as well as W. H. Auden. It also has many earlier writers such as Donne and Shakespeare. It ranges from the sacred to the profane all within the form of the sonnet, causing me to tear up and to laugh out loud. The introduction goes into the history and structure of the sonnet, so this is an excellent supplement for texts on language and poetry. This slim volume offers a wealth of material for meditation.
