If a Picture's Worth 1,000 Words, 1,000 pictures..
This book is the lastest in the series of books featuring 1,000 planes by noted aviation historian and photographer Gerry Manning. The book features preserved aircraft from all around the world, which is the book's greatest strength. As the author states in the introduction, a "preserved aircraft" can range from a flying specimen to a museum piece to a gate guardian; what they all have in common is that these aircraft exist long after the type had been retired from frontline service.
The book presents a nice selection of military and civilian aircraft from nearly every era, though the book features more of the former than the latter. The most interesting civilian aircraft in this book are those in the former Soviet Union - these airplanes are well represented.
I feel the book earns four rather than five stars because the format - presenting 1,000 aircraft - leads to multiple limitations. Because so many aircraft are featured, the photos are somewhat small (otherwise, to include larger photos, the book would have been as thick as the Oxford English Dictionary). On the other hand, 1,000 represents only a sample of the preserved aircraft in existence. My other complaint is that the aircraft appear somewhat haphazardly; the index at the end is invaluable in locating a specific aircraft, especially those that are extremely rare (many of which have been included).
On the positive side, this book, with high-quality photos and informative captions, offers the aviation enthusiast and historian an enjoyable reference, well worth the money.
