The '60s cult psych band Kaleidoscope was so multi-faceted that a single-disc compilation can't do much more than scratch the surface. However, the excellent, well-chosen Egyptian Candy does do a more-than-adequate job of presenting this Los Angeles conglomeration of blues purists, ethnomusicologists, and general freaks. This collects tracks from the group's first three Columbia albums -- Side Trips (1967), A Beacon From Mars (1968), and Kaleidoscope (1969) -- plus the one half-decent track from 1970's dire Bernice and three really quite good previously unreleased songs, including the squirrelly title track and the whirling "Sefan," a traditional Middle Eastern tune rocked-up in the inimitable Kaleidoscope style. The collection has its flaws, the most egregious of which is its inexplicable omission of the group's finest track, Side Trips' haunted, scarifying rendition of the folk standard "Oh Death." That aside, the selection is evenly balanced between the blues, psychedelia, and ethnic folk sides of the group's musical personality, and is therefore a more solid introduction than any of their proper albums. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi
