Particularly amusing are the boy's encounters with various historical figures, including an entertainment-starved Napoleon (Ian Holm), a powerful Agamemnon (Sean Connery), and a surprisingly stuffy Robin Hood, embodied by Gilliam's Python cohort John Cleese. Episodic by nature, the film is less successful when dealing with the larger narrative, which concerns the pursuit of the dwarves and their time-traveling map by the Supreme Being. PLOT: Six of he Supreme Being's lower echelon creators steal the map to time. They pick up a tag-a-long young boy on their adventure to steal the great objects of history. Evil incarnate happens to finnagle the map away from them and someone comes to the rescue.
RETURN ON INVESTMENT: 9 of 10; As a diversion fantasy and a child's amusement vehicle, you can't do much better than this. The twists on events is entertaining as you might expect from the writer/director, Terry Gilliam, who brings Pyhtonesque humor to the big screen for the first sucessful time.
