One Horse Farm, first published in 1950, tells the story of a boy and a horse who grow up together on a farm and watch the world change around them. It's a book that comes from the heart for legendary Maine artist Dahlov Ipcar, who has lived on a farm in Georgetown, Maine, for more than seventy years. It was the life I lived, she says.

This is a delightful story by a true artist. She recreates the life of a small family farm--a life she and her husband actually lived in Maine. She tells the parallel stories of a colt and a baby boy born on the same day to the same family. I hadn't heard of Ipcar until a few years ago when I was given a used library copy of One Horse Farm by a friend. I have since sought out all her children's books and enjoyed them with my grandchildren.
