This is a fine work of southern fiction with a "voice" similar to that of James Agee. It was made into very good movie, the only one directed by Charles Laughton. The movie has not received the attention it deserves, IMHO.

Night of the Hunter
This book by Davis Grubbi is too little read, but has a fervid pulpy style that makes a great read. You can see why it inspired a great motion picture in the 1950's. The book is has all the wildness, passion, twisted religious fever that inspired Charles Laughton to direct it. Grubb's prose is mad and really delicious at times, with a nice southern style to the writing. Like the movie, it goes to an oddly different tone toward the end. A strange and wonderful book - definitely worth revisiting!
