This is a beautiful book! It takes place soon after the War Between the States.
A soul-weary, ex-Civil War soldier travels to Fort Worth to collect his brother's mail-order bride. Dallas, the intended groom, has broken his leg and cannot travel. Thus, he sends his hideously disfigured brother, Houston, to meet her train.
West Texas has probably 500 men for each woman. However, Dallas feels safe sending Houston because folks can't stand to look at Houston's face (he lost an eye, etc).
Amelia, the bride, is eager to escape war-ravaged Georgia and has corresponded with Dallas for a time -- before travelling to Texas.
In the hands of a less-talented writer, this could have turned into a syrupy tale. Ms. Heath, however creates 2 fascinating main characters, without turning Dallas into a "heavy."
This is important, because in the second book, TEXAS GLORY, Dallas becomes one of the main characters.
A great read! However, I didn't give this story a "5" because of Amelia's marriage situation; She was married to one man and wanted to marry another. Why didn't she speak up earlier?

Sweet and Simple
The first in a trilogy by Lorraine Heath, Texas Destiny is a really touching exploration of unlikely love. It's heartwarming without being overly sugary. The leading man, Houston, is one of the best male characters in romance, a real wounded hero selling himself short until the right woman comes into his life. Highly recommended.
