Il protagonista di questa vicenda, Vitangelo Moscarda, � una persona ordinaria, che ha ereditato da giovane la banca del padre e vive di rendita. Un giorno, tuttavia, in seguito all'osservazione da parte della moglie la quale gli dice che il suo naso � leggermente storto, inizia ad avere una crisi di identit�, a rendersi conto che le persone intorno a lui hanno un'immagine della sua persona completamente diversa dalla sua. Da quel momento l'obiettivo di Vitangelo sar� quello di scoprire chi � veramente lui. Decide quindi di cambiare vita (rinunciando ad essere un usuraio) anche a costo della propria rovina economica e contro il volere della moglie che nel frattempo � andata via di casa. In questo suo gesto c'� il desiderio di un'opera di carit� ma anche quello di non essere considerato pi� dalla moglie come una marionetta. Anche Anna Rosa, un'amica di sua moglie che lui conosce poco, gli racconta di aver fatto di tutto per far intendere a sua moglie che Vitangelo non era lo sciocco che lei immaginava e che non c'era in lui il male. Il protagonista arriver� alla follia in uno ospizio, dove per� si sentir� libero da ogni regola, in quanto le sue sensazioni lo porteranno a vedere il mondo da un'altra prospettiva. Vitangelo Moscarda conclude che, per uscire dalla prigione in cui la vita rinchiude, non basta cambiare nome: proprio perch� la vita � una continua evoluzione, il nome rappresenta la morte. Dunque, l'unico modo per vivere in ogni istante � vivere attimo per attimo la vita, rinascendo continuamente in modo diverso. Il titolo del romanzo � una chiave di lettura per comprenderlo fino in fondo, infatti quella di Vitangelo Moscarda � la storia di una consapevolezza che si va man mano formando: la consapevolezza che l'uomo non � Uno, e che la realt� non � oggettiva. Il protagonista passa dal considerarsi unico per tutti (Uno, appunto) a concepire che egli � un nulla (Nessuno), attraverso la presa di coscienza dei diversi se stesso che via via diventa nel suo rapporto con gli altri (Centomila). In questo modo la realt� perde la sua oggettivit� e si sgretola nell'infinito vortice del relativismo. Nel suo tentativo di distruggere i centomila estranei che vivono negli altri, le centomila concezioni che gli altri hanno di lui, viene preso per pazzo dalla gente, che non vuole accettare che il mondo sia diverso da come lo immagina. Vitangelo Moscarda � il "forestiere della vita", colui che ha capito che le persone sono "schiave" degli altri e di se stesse. Egli vede gli altri vivere in questa trappola, ma neanche lui ne � completamente libero: il fatto che la gente l'abbia preso per pazzo � la dimostrazione che non � possibile distruggere le centomila immagini, a lui estranee, che gli altri hanno di lui. � possibile solo farle impazzire. La fine del romanzo � molto profonda, conclusione degna per un'opera di questa portata. Il rifiuto totale della persona comporta la frantumazione dell'io, perch� esso si dissolve completamente nella natura. Pieno di significati � il rifiuto del nome, che falsifica ed imprigiona la realt� in forme immutabili, quasi come un'epigrafe funeraria. Al contrario della vita, che � un divenire perenne, secondo la concezione vitalistica di Pirandello.
