Archibald Smith (1798-1870) was a Scottish physician who resided in Peru from 1826-70. He was hired by the Anglo Pasco Peruvian Mining Co, a British company extracting silver in the high Andes, to aid the English miners and officials in the process of adapting to low oxygen environments, but once arrived at the mines found himself caring for many different nationalities suffering a variety of maladies. A year after his arrival the mining company went bankrupt and Smith moved to the valley of Huanuco where he rented land and began producing sugar cane but, after facing many adversities, in 1830 he decided to settle in Lima. Here he was appointed ward physician at Lima's military hospital and also medical advisor at another hospital. These appointments gave him the opportunity to engage with other physicians, experiment with medical treatments and develop a better understanding of the Peruvian public health situation. Smith combined his hospital work with private practice and within a few years had become one of the most consulted physicians for North American and European immigrants. By the mid-19th century he was one of the foremost authorities on yellow fever and climatology, actively participating in debates and publishing many papers. This account of his early experiences in Peru was first published in 1839 in two volumes. Volume 1 of 2.
