I bought my first copy from a little used book store next to Camp Humphreys in South Korea. The book was an old paper back well read and beaten up, but when I read it the story was like magic. Delderfield draws a complex and sensitive picture of the people and world of a turbulent time. I still have the remains of my copy from Korea, it has been read so many times I have lost count. Now I have this beautiful new hard back copy, which I read immediately upon receiving it. This is a book that anyone reading it could not help but love.

Great Novel
This has been the first novel that I have read for many years and what a delight it was to read. Although this book was first published in 1949 it still offers anyone interested in the Napoleonic Wars an engrossing story of men at war.
The author provides the reader with a great story of seven French Voltiguers (elite skirmishers and/or marksmen) fighting during the campaigns of the Empire under Napoleon from the battle of Aspern to the final showdown at Waterloo.
We trudge through cannonades and cavalry charges, hot dusty treks into Spain and Portugal and into the Winter of Russia before the final campaigns and battles of 1813, 1814 and 1815. Although the battle scenes are not in-depth accounts the author provides enough for the reader to get a feel for the heat of battle
I found myself rushing through the book to find out what happened to my brave Voltiguers and actually felt a touch of sadness at the end of the story for the fate of these brave men.

R.F. Delderfield's Great Story Of Men At War
If you enjoy a great war story, don't miss Seven Men Of Gascony.
As a former infantry soldier myself, I can say that this is one of the few books on the Napoleonic Wars that rings true, from the daily struggle to get enough to eat, to the long marches, and the weight of the packs.
It is the story of one file of Gascon soldiers in Napoleon's army. Through the early glory, the Russian winter, and Waterloo.
