DESCRIPTION-Eyes Shut introduces to English readers the first novel by Federigo Tozzi, now acclaimed with Pirandello and Italo Svevo as one of the most inventive Italian writers of this century. Tozzi based his novels on his own life. Eyes Shut (Con gli occhi chiusi) draws on his early years, his conflict with a bullying father and his infatuation with a young country girl. He had intended to call the book First Love, but that would have been misleading: this is no conventional romance. Tozzi writes in a modernist manner, renouncing the privilege of the omniscient narrator, letting characters emerge with as little interference as possible. As his translator Kenneth Cox remarks, Tozzi ‘does not so much flout literary conventions as seem unaware that any exist'; he suggests that Tozzi's writing resembles the work of the medieval Sienese painters: 'Figures are shown close-up and flat-on, in feeling intense and in clarity of perception pitiless.
