I am currently reading Sweet briar Autumn and have enjoyed each book in this series. Being a girl born in Seattle General Hospital and then raised on the Duwamish River & lived most all of my life (60 yrs) in the greater Seattle area the later years up in NE Everett, I have enjoyed the exciting history woven thru out the story of the dry history of the founding of Seattle and the area.
I was raised on the river with so many Indian arrowheads as we roamed the fields and woods of that area as a kid we used to throw them in the river as there were so many. I now understand it was a war ground that I grew up on and what a waste that was as a kid.
But to actual people to the names of streets such as Denney, Mercer, and Lander where Sears was located was named after Judge Lander etc...The Maynard building after the dr and Dexter Horton was an actual person.
But a real treat to know the folks that actually pioneered the virgin soil, fighting the elements to plow and plant and build a huge city.
My kin first migrated there in 1880's from WI and MI and to realize Seattle was only 40ish yrs old when they arrived tells me they were also early Seattle Pioneers. They had a candy store on the top of the hill on Pike Street then later purchased the lots on the Duwamish in 1918 after going to the Yukon Gold Rush. I still need to put our history in at the State Park on Yestler.
Thank you Brenda for your hard work looking into archives to learn the history then bring it to life for us ole Seattle folks. AlamoAA
