Trumble is a minimum security federal prison, home to drug dealers, bank robbers, swindlers, embezzlers, tax evaders, and three former judges who call themselves The Brethren. They meet each day in the law library where they spend hours writing letters. They are fine-tuning a mail scam, and it's starting to pay big. The money is pouring in. But then their little scam goes awry. It ensnares the wrong victim, a powerful man on the outside, a man with dangerous friends, and The Brethren's days of quietly marking time are over.

Not One of Grisham's Best
Normally, I?m a big John Grisham fan. His books are crisp, well-written and crackle with essential moral dilemmas. In The Brethren, however, there is no right or wrong, and subsequently no hero, flawed or otherwise, to root for. All the characters are odious?the blackmailers, the politician, the lawyer, and the spook are all corrupted beyond redemption. Even worse, these multiple antagonists are all rewarded in varying degrees for their greed.
This is Mr. Grisham at his most cynical and I?m afraid I can?t recommend it.
