This Newbery Honor Book is set on an island off the coasts of Virginia and Maryland where a band of wild ponies has lived for centuries. A rarely seen mare that eludes all efforts to capture her lives among the ponies. Called Phantom, she is captured in frenzied roundup; however, she would forever be a creature of the wild. I was born horse-crazy; Misty of Chincoteague is one of my childhood favorites. I purchased this copy for my great-grandchild Michaela, and gave it to her Christmas.
Marguerite Henry was a gifted author, very good at bring as child into her chosen world. just looking at the copy of the book seemed to take me back to the Outer Banks of Carolina. I loved the book as a child; I'm looking forward to seeing what Michaela's reaction to the story will be some 70 years later.
the copy of the book I purchased was clean, undamaged and bright...looked new. it's very satisfying to be able to find an old book friend to recommend for my grandchildren and great-grandchildren at a price I can afford to pay. Thanks, Alibris!

A classic that still resonates
I loved this book when I was a kid, so I bought a copy for a young relative. She is crazy about it also. Interesting depiction of life on Chicoteague and lots of horses for us fans!

Treasures
It's a book by Marguerite Henry, illustrated by Dennis Wesley. What else is there to say. Any books done in collaboration between these two are treasures to be kept for ever. Make sure you get an early edition with coloured illustrations. Some of the new editions have black and white illustrations. No comparison!
