I read this book aloud to my son and it was difficult to tell who enjoyed it more! The story is based long ago but the authors enveloping style makes you feel as if you're watching the story unfold before your eyes. Matt and Attean are as different a two people could possibly be but due to Attean's grandfather they become like brothers. This is a great book that demonstrates great respect and friendship.

Matt is left alone by his Father in the wilderness, and he has to learn to take care of himself when his Father is gone much longer than expected. When an Indian chief and his grandson come to visit, Matt finds himself agreeing to teach an Indian boy, Attean, how to read. With Robinson Crusoe for a text book, the two boys start out. Matthew learns a lot about teaching, and also learns from Attean the Indian way of life.
