This is a 19th century tale of philandering, adultery, lack of funds and a life of music. Richard Wagner, separated from his first wife, Minna, is in the midst of a number of relationships with ladies (some married) and all quite ready to succumb to his charms. He is about to seduce Cosima, daughter of the famous Liszt, mother of two daughters and wife of Hans von Bulow, friend and fellow musician. A favourite of the young king of Bavaria, Ludwig II, Wagner is put on salary and begins to compose the works that have come to encompass the spirit of German music - Die Walkure, Tristan and Isolde, Parsifal and of course, The Ring. Cosima goes to live with him, bearing two children before they can marry. Their son, Siegfried, is the only child born within the marriage. Always battling a lack of funds, striving to build the festival theatre at Bayreuth, often thwarted by the growing psychological impairment of an aging Ludwig II, Wagner comes across as emotionally unstable, wanting Cosima with him at all times, distressed when they are apart and yet infatuated with the younger Judith Gautier.
By including some of Wagner's letters and entries from Cosima's diary, Geoffrey Skelton gives a rounded picture of life in this larger-than-life family. The book can be judged a little dry, even turgid at times, but Wagner's story is so rich in plot that it is worthy of a Wagner composition in itself, and is the obvious precursor to 'Twilight Of The Wagners' by great grandson, Gottfried Wagner, which brings the story through to the Hitler years.
