Shadows and Lace features my favorite kind of heroine: strong, independent, capable and sweetly vulnerable. The hero is typical: loud, domineering, brash and totally ignorant of his own feelings.
The story starts out with the heroine, Rowena, lost in a game of dice by her father to Sir Gareth of Caerleon, who deliberately baited Rowena's father in hopes of obtaining a chance to exact some sort of revenge on her father for a past betrayal. This story plot has been used many times before and will doubtless be used again by future writers.
But what sets Shadows and Lace apart are the characters and the sweetly wonderful way Rowena and Gareth fall in love with each other. The characters are very endearing, typical of Medeiros' characters, with strengths and weaknesses that are brought out and dealt with smoothly.
I truly enjoyed Shadows and Lace and I hope others will too.
