Although many other great books have been written about Los Angeles, this is one of the best. Set on the Westside in the 1960s, it describes the relocation of a professor and his wife from the East Coast...he quickly gets sucked into the dying beatnik scene of Venice Beach, while she rebels against Hollywood glitz. The results are surprising. For natives there are vivid descriptions of the city during the construction of the San Diego Freeway.
