Wow, very great! Way back in 1998 college days, I never had an interest in reading books until a neighbor lend me this novel after my exams. That book appears thick because it has long been bought, so I felt hesitant to read. However I found no other to read, so I had no choice but when I started to read the first few pages, I forgot all about those things and my attention was caught by the author's story-telling expertise.
In this book, I realized how great determination and intelligence would give everyone success in life the way Jamie M. did in the novel. He is an optimist who looks on things positively and courageously deals with his goals and ambition. On Kate, I saw and understood the reason why rich people tends to keep on enriching. For Kate, the fact of winning in almost all her dealings is what keeps her ideals. It overthrows the value of the prize over the contest, and that was her pride - the MASTER OF THE GAME.
This was the very first novel I read and because I enjoyed it very much, I read and read more novels from then on. I suggest you grab a copy to read so you will learn the lessons from the characters.

diamonds the size of hen's eggs
The first half of this book is about Jamie McGregor who leaves Scotland and travels by whatever means he can find, and arrives in South Africa some two years later to search for his fortune in diamonds. He is 18 years old, naive, and too believing in peoples honesty. He is lied to, cheated, beat almost to death, left in the desert, naked , to be killed by the elements, almost drowns in the ocean, almost eaten by sharks, almost shot for being in a restricted diamond mine field, steals a fortune that he figures rightly belongs to him, and then returns to where he started, the town of Kliddrift, a rich man, unrecognizable because of the beaten he had taken, and the fact his hair has turned completely white from his ordeal. He starts his revenge on those that cheated him and tried to kill him. Then we go two generations forward to Kate Blackwell who is Jamies granddaughter and heir to his vast fortune. She is shrewd, conniving, only interested in advancing the company, and it's fortunes, making sure it is always controlled by Blackwells. If you are like me, you will learn to hate her. Thiis a great story, enjoy it.
