I was swayed by the positive reviews of this book and the reputation of the author but was disappointed when the book actually arrived. The story is stilted and confusing for someone familiar with Chinese folk tales; some elements are actual parts of the Chinese folk tales, other elements are made up. The characters are very flat and unnuanced. The illustrations feature stereotypical views of what one might see visiting tourist sites in China: pavilions, palace gardens, rural villages, and so on. I had hoped to add this to our school's library so children could learn more about Chinese narrative traditions, but after reading it, I do not think this is a good choice. My search continues.

Although this is primarily a young adult book, I found it very special. The blend of the poor, hard working family, and the great myth stories the young girl's father tells makes the book a must read.
