Hoyle was among the best science fiction writers, and also among the most important astronomers in modern times, discovering the process by which stars produce heavy elements (many scientists think he ought to have been given the nobel prize for this work).
The book is a fast paced adventure, tying fictionally to his technical monograph on Malthus' economic thesis, where he argued that it is not overpopualtion and the failure to produce a large enough food supply which is the danger--Malthus had overlooked technology--but instead any failure in organization in today's large society which is most potentially hazardous. In the book, which presents a view of "islands of different time" before Arthur Clarke's later work, also has a clever discussion on quantum theory. It is also a fun adventure relating to music.
