This book questions the assumption that classroom problems are always the fault of students who don't do what they are told. New classroom management techniques are not the answer, he says. Instead, we must reconsider what we're telling students to do and to learn. He shows how a fundamentally cynical view of children lies beneath the assumption that we must tell students exactly how we expect them to behave and then punish or reward them accordingly. Kohn contrasts the idea of discipline, in which things are done to students to control their behavior, with an approach in which we work with students to create caring communities where decisions are made together.

I am reading this book after having read other books on discipline, specifically Teaching With Love and Logic and The Essential 55. Both of the other books I read assume that a major goal of being a teacher is gaining control of the classroom, and underlying this, assume that students need to be controlled. Kohn looks deeper, and offers suggestions (and examples) on how to create a classroom that minimizes the need for "management", since in these classrooms, the students feel safe, autonomous, and actually motivated to learn (since they have some say in what and how they learn). I HIGHLY recommend this book to pre-service teachers, new teachers, veteran teachers, and parents. I feel so much more prepared to be an excellent teacher after having read it. I also recommend discussing it with fellow teachers and parents.
