The subject of this novel is far from uplifting. It's dark, disturbing, even, depressing. But the skill of MacDonald makes it readable, believable, debatable, and, before you know it, you "have to find out what happened in the end". You hope with all your heart that truth and goodness prevails, that right overturns wrong and justice wins the day. You smile at some scenes and cry at others. There is so much love, irony and wit embroidered into, an essentially, vile story. Literally; a masterpiece!!

This is a book that you will either love or hate. I almost threw it down at one point. I thought "oh, no, this author is writing about another pedophile!". But I stuck with it and I'm glad I did. There are things about this book that you will probably hate. I didn't know if I'd end up giving it one star or five, but it is a testament to the authors skill at stoytelling that in spite of the elements of this story that make it very unappealing, the characters draw you on. There are moments where you just want to reach inside the story and get one of these children to tell. There are moments where you anguish over the conflicts facing the father. where does his greater duty lie? To the truth or the "greater good"? I went from wanting to throw the book down to not being able to PUT it down. Warning: you will think you know who the murderer is early on, but hold on, stay with it, the end is worth it. Kudos to Ms. MacDonald. Her characters are real people. You love some, you hate some, and some get a little of both. Both disturbing and wonderful!
