"William Archer Butler (1814? -48) was Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Dublin and a founder of the "Edinburgh University Magazine", as well as a regular contributor to the periodical from 1833 right up until his death. His writings were on a wide range of subjects ranging from poetry (he was an acquaintance of William Wordsworth) to history, theology and philosophy. Butler's "Lecturers on the History of Ancient Philosophy" was edited after his death with notes by William Hepworth Thompson, a Fellow of Trinity College and writer of editions of "Phaedrus" (1868) and the Gorgias (1871). The lectures were originally delivered to students at Trinity College, Dublin during Butler's first four years as Professor, and are based on the author's knowledge of the original documents and use of the German histories of philosophy, including that of Ritter. Volume 1 begins witha brief introduction to the subject and also contains a thorough examination of Socrates. To this the editor provides references for additional historical resources. The second volume of Butler's extensive lectures should be of interest to those scholars interested in Plato and the Platonists. Also noteworthy are the sections on Neo-Platonism and the three lectures on Aristotle. " (Publisher)
