W.G. Hoskins was born in Exeter in 1908. He ended his career as Professor of English Local History at the University of Leicester, head of the first department devoted to the field of study he helped found - local and landscape history. He was also Reader in Economic History at the University of Oxford, a Fellow of the Royal Academy and a CBE.
